Review: Eduard 1/48 SE.5a Detail Sets: Propeller, Radiator, and Guns

Introduction:

The new Eduard 1/48 SE.5a is a beautiful kit that right out of the box will produce a very nice model. However, for those stricken with “the details disease” and compelled to search for better photo-etch and resin, Eduard has not let us you down. Released in conjunction with their new 1/48 SE.5a are Brassin replacement guns, radiator, and propeller. All three sets are what we’ve come to expect from Eduard aftermarket details: state of the art. What follows are reviews and pictures of the instructions and parts for each set.

1) SE.5a Propeller, Two-Blade (right) #648-297

This is a nicely detailed, drop-in replacement for the kit part. Only a small amount of modification is required for installation. The resin propeller comes with a separate resin hub complete with PE details.

2) SE.5a Radiator, Wolsey Viper #648-298

Being a prominent feature of the SE.5a, the radiator is an item you may want to spruce up a bit. This is a drop-in replacement requiring very little modification for installation. The resin radiator tank with filler cap and PE cooling grill inserts is beautifully cast, as are the shutter assemblies. This will be going on my SE.5a for sure.

3) SE.5a Guns #648-299

This is a surprisingly comprehensive detail set providing both guns (cockpit and upper wing) as well gun mounts, ammo drums, triggers, and sights. A 7-step, two-sheet instruction manual is included to assist assembly. This is a really nice set for those wishing to augment the armament of their SE.5. Note that not all pilots used the upper wing gun so check references for the aircraft your building. Nice.

Conclusion:

As usual, Mr. Eduard did not let us down. The resin parts of these sets are beautifully cast and the engineering is such that most are simple drop-in replacements requiring very little modification to the model for installation. The addition of one or all of these sets will take an awesome model just one step further to capturing the look of the 1:1.

Now go paint something!
